How To Find Inexpensive Auto Insurance

2010 April 16

While the economy slumps, household budgets are getting tighter every day. Car insurance represents a significant percentage of most household transportation costs, and any efforts you can make to trim back can make a significant difference in your pocketbook every month. Despite what insurance companies might tell you in the national advertising campaigns, getting the best deal isn’t necessarily as simple as getting online or making a call.

The Internet has armed consumers with more information than ever, allowing people to comparison shop for just about anything, including auto insurance. Keep in mind, however, that even the Internet has its limitations. There are plenty of websites that allow shoppers to round up and compare insurance quotes from a number of different companies.

Often, however, these sites are able to give shoppers “free” quotes because they make money on advertising. One of their sources of advertising revenue are the companies that pay to have their policies listed as close to the top of the page as they can afford. That’s not to say you can’t find a good rate, but it’s something to keep in mind.

While nationally known insurance companies provide good policies and can give their customers good value, don’t count out the smaller, more local options. Certainly, nationally known providers got that big by providing good service, but remember that clever national ad campaigns are expensive. Consider whether you’re paying for good insurance, or if your premium dollars might be going somewhere else.

Also, don’t discount the old fashioned method. In other words, get the phone book out, blow the dust off it, and call your local auto insurance agents. They are familiar with the laws and regulations in your state. Never underestimate the value of talking to a live human being. An agent can answer questions, and offer special deals, usually without the aggravation of navigating a touch-tone menu.

While you’re talking to them, be sure to ask about discounts. Many providers offer discounts for a number of circumstances: safe drivers, good students, veterans, seniors, and many others. The best way to find out is to ask.

This is the kind of information that an automated quote website won’t be able to give you. Anyway, the worst thing they can say is “no.” There’s no risk in asking and the potential payoff could be considerable over time.

In the rush to find inexpensive auto insurance, be careful not to over or under insure your vehicle. For instance, an early model used car probably doesn’t need full comprehensive coverage. Basic liability may be sufficient. For a late model sports car, however, going cheap might turn out to be a disastrous decision should the worst happen. Get adequate coverage.

This was so timely. I recently change my address on my insurance and the amount increased $150 every 6 months.
